A Fun & Educational Family Night

A couple of friend's who visited Swisslane Dairy Farms raved about it and suggested other families check it out. I happened to look at their website last Friday and found that they had a Friday Family Night that evening. The weather was not ideal -a bit of rain and chilly, but we decided to brave it anyway and boy am I glad we did! They do a "Dairy Discovery" tour for about an hour and it is amazing what both kids and adults learn on the tour! Before the tour began we visited the goats and the calf in the barn and petted them. Joshua also played in the huge corn bin. Then it was time for the tour! At the beginning of our tour the guide asked us if we wanted to see a calf being born to which everyone on the tour responded with a huge "YES". Unfortunately we were about 2 minutes too late to watch the actual birth, but we did get to see the little bull calf and watch his mother clean him off. We saw the hundreds of other cows in the barn and then walked over to the milking parlor to watch the milking process. A visit with the calves was next and Joshua got to feed a couple calves bottles of water - the calves he chose were kind of feisty when drinking so he didn't last but a minute into feeding them and then Cory had to finish. As part of this family night we got to go on a hayride and enjoy some tasty dairy treats including milk, cheese and ice cream! Joshua also received a little goodie bag at the end of our visit. We all had a great time and Joshua is still talking about it! A video of our fun night is below.
